Four Arrested on Cannibalism Charges

KIEV (Reuters) - Ukraine's police have arrested three men and a woman on suspicion of murdering five people and then eating their flesh.



"During the last case they killed a young woman in a forest and then cut out fleshy parts of the body and ate them. This is horrible," a spokeswoman for police in central Ukraine said on Monday.

She said the four suspected cannibals were a husband and wife, her brother and a friend.

Crime has increased in Ukraine since the break-up of the former Soviet Union, but cases of cannibalism are rare.

Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported the four people had tortured their last victim, cutting her ears before killing her.

Soccer Players Flogged for Moral Corruption

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Two members of the Iranian national soccer team have received dozens of lashes for "moral corruption," the state-owned Iran newspaper said Saturday.



It said unnamed players had been identified by videos and photographs found in a raid on an illegal Tehran brothel. One of the players received 170 lashes and the other 70. Six players were given cash fines.

Prostitution is illegal in Iran, which is governed by strict Islamic Sharia law. Flogging is a common form of punishment for moral crimes.

The players confessed their crimes and vowed to lead an honorable life. They said they had been invited to a party after their elimination from the 1998 World Cup finals in France where they had been "trapped" in the "vice network."

The newspaper said the court procedures took 15 months to complete, but did not say when the sentences were carried out.

Japan Bans Judo Kids with Thin Eyebrows

TOKYO (Reuters) - Six Japanese high school students were ejected from a judo tournament to teach them a lesson after they shaved their eyebrows to a fashionable but intimidating thin line.


Kyodo news agency, quoting organizers Saturday, said the six had been disqualified from a judo tournament in Utsunomiya, north of Tokyo, on the grounds that the current Japanese teenage fad gave them an unfair advantage.

"We have banned thin eyebrows because they are intimidating to opponents and cause displeasure," Tatsuo Kakizaki, an tournament organizer, was quoted as saying.

"We disqualified them as a lesson, to teach them the importance of competing in accordance with the rules."

Police Told to Speed Up Gang-Rape Case

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan's Supreme Court ordered police Thursday to speed up their investigation of a gang-rape ordered by a traditional village jury and to bring formal charges against those involved.


Mukhtaran Mai was raped by four men last month on the orders of a village jury, or panchayat, to atone for her brother's alleged affair with a girl from a different tribe.

The incident sparked national outrage, highlighting the sometimes uneasy co-existence in the country of traditional law alongside Islamic and civil law.

The Supreme Court has stepped in to monitor the case and on Thursday, when police officials made a routine report, ordered them to speed up the investigation.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police of central Punjab province, Asif Nawaz, told the court that 13 of 15 suspects had been arrested so far.

He said the victim had been medically examined and had recorded her statement before a magistrate.

The court also ordered the police to provide full protection to Mai and her family because of fears the rival tribe might try to harass them. The Independent English-language daily Dawn said on Thursday that a governor's inspection team which went to the area to investigate the incident discovered that Mai's brother had been sodomized by Mastoi tribesmen before her rape.

Quoting the team's findings, the paper said his attackers then falsely accused him of raping one of their women, and gang-raped his sister to avenge the shame.

Most sex-related crimes go unreported in Pakistan because of the perpetrators' influence or the social stigma attached to the victims.

I know this is long, but please read it all. I hope it will help you in any way. I'll admit that most of your site is pretty humorous...until I got to the part about "teaching teens". I am a teen myself (14 yrs. to be exact) and I was astonished and disgusted by your words "What has Christ done for you?". He died for you...and no I'm not trying to sound annoying and I'm not going to try to get you to accept Christ BUT seriously...I think you should remove that part. It may be funny to you and other people but when it all comes down to it...it's not. I know that not everyone is going to go to heaven after they die, but why would you risk someone actually believing what you say about Him and going to hell just as you may do yourself. I don't know anything about you but I do hope you reconsider your words. Jesus died for you...and no we haven't seen him in human/physical form but he IS there. You can't always see stars, but you know they're there...so that proves my point...Just b/c you can't see something it doesn't mean it's not there. Think about this...Wouldn't you rather live as if there is a God and die to find out that there isn't...or live as if there isn't a God and die to find out there is? I can't make you believe in God or Christ or in anything I say for that matter, but why would I take the time to write this if I really didn't have the faith in my heart that God really does exist. There are so many things that can't be explained here on earth but you have to have faith that God will take care of everything. No, he doesn't pay your bills and he doesn't buy you a home, car, etc. BUT he did give you life, and your life is how YOU make it. Think of all the things he HAS given you. I know this world isn't in the best of shape right now with all this terrorist attack mess going on but praying is the best thing you can do. I don't care if you make fun of me for doing this...I basically could care less. All I know is that I'm going to heaven when I leave this world....and I wish I could say the same for you. You can change that though...all you have to do is take that first step. I promise you...if you ever do decide to accept Jesus all your burdens will be lifted. Packers' Davenport Arrested in Miami

MIAMI (AP) - Green Bay Packers fullback Najeh Davenport was arrested Monday, accused of breaking into a university dormitory and defecating in a woman's closet.

Davenport, 23, surrendered to police Monday and was charged with a second-degree felony count of burglary and a misdemeanor count of criminal mischief, said Richard Master, a Miami Shores police spokesman.

The former University of Miami player was wanted on a warrant issued in April. He was released Monday from a Miami-Dade County jail after posting a $6,500 bond. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

"This whole thing is a misunderstanding. Najeh had nothing to do with the situation," said Richard Sharpstein, Davenport's attorney.

According to police, Davenport crept into a dorm room at Barry University around 6 a.m. on April 1. A woman sleeping in the room, Mary McCarthy, told police she was startled by a strange sound and saw Davenport squatting in her closet. Davenport then allegedly defecated in a laundry basket, McCarthy told detectives.

McCarthy told police she didn't know Davenport. Campus security identified the football player from a picture in the University of Miami yearbook.

Sharpstein said he was confident authorities would drop the charges against his client.

The Packers released a statement Monday saying team officials have spoken to Davenport about the allegations.

"It would be inappropriate for us to comment further on this matter, however, until the legal system has run its course," the statement read.

The 6-foot-2, 248-pound Davenport was selected by the Packers in the fourth round of the NFL draft.

200 priests investigated for sexual abuses in Philippines

Some 200 Roman Catholic priests in the Philippines have been investigated for sexual misconduct over the past 20 years, a church leader said as the clergy apologized for the abuses.

Archbishop Orlando Quevedo, president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines said late Monday that some of the 200 priests have been dismissed and most have resigned from the church voluntarily.

He gave no other details.

The abuses led the bishops to formulate a "protocol" addressing the problem of priests who commit sexual abuses, Quevedo said.

After their annual conference held over the weekend, the CBCP issued an unprecedented statement Monday apologizing for the "grave sins committed by some leaders on members of the flock."

Quevedo said the most severe punishment of such priests might include the filing of criminal charges of rape and child abuse.

Sex scandals implicating priests in the United States have brought greater attention to incidents in the Philippines, one of only two predominantly Catholic countries in Asia, the other being the newly independent East Timor.

Some priests in the Philippines, home to more than 50 million Catholics, have allegedly sexually abused parishioners or had mistresses.

British rockers Oasis are back on top of the charts in Britain with the band's fifth album, "Heathen Chemistry," ousting Eminem's "The Eminem Show" on Sunday.


But the rebound hasn't mellowed singer Noel Gallagher, who has verbally attacked fellow pop star George Michael, branding him "a liar and a fake," BBC Online reports.

Michael's controversial new song, Shoot the Dog, satirizes British Prime Minister Tony Blair's relationship with President Bush, depicting Blair as a poodle in the song's cartoon video.

But Gallagher said the attempt at social commentary by Michael - who concealed his homosexuality until 1998 when he was caught propositioning a Los Angeles police officer in a public toilet - was "laughable."

"What's he trying to say?" Gallagher said. "This is the guy who hid who he actually was from the public for 20 years. Now, all of a sudden, he's got something to say about the way of the world. I find it laughable.

"That's even before you get to the song, which is diabolical."

Oasis brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher are known for their scathing attacks on other artists. Noel called Kylie Minogue "a demonic little idiot," while Liam said Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham was too stupid to write a book. Other perennial targets include Robbie Williams and Blur and Gorillaz singer Damon Albarn.

David Hasselhoff is battling alcohol abuse.

In a brief release Monday, his spokeswoman confirms TV's favorite lifeguard has entered rehab.

" David Hasselhoff has checked himself into the Betty Ford Center. He realized his social drinking had increased more than he was comfortable with, and he decided to do something about it," publicist Judy Katz says in the statement.

Katz did not address last week's National Enquirer that claimed the former Baywatch star, who turns 50 on July 17, had nearly died from alcohol poisoning during a binge last month.

According to the supermarket tabloid, Hasselhoff had entered the Betty Ford Center, located outside Palm Springs, California, in late June only to check himself out two days later. At about 10:30 p.m. on June 25, he turned up--with no luggage--at the Desert Springs Marriott Resort and Spa in nearby Palm Desert and got himself a room, according to the paper.

The following day, hotel staffers reportedly found him unconscious in his room next to an empty minibar. Paramedics were able to revive the actor, according to the Enquirer, and rushed him to emergency room at Eisenhower Medical Center, where he was treated for alcohol poisoning and then returned to the Betty Ford Center. His wife, Pam, was said to have flown out from Los Angeles to be by his side.

"Thank God they got to my son when they did. If they hadn't, he would have died!" the paper quotes Hasselhoff's father Joe as saying.

After shooting to fame opposite a talking Trans Am in NBC's Knight Rider, Hasselhoff became a worldwide sensation as Baywatch's head lifeguard, Mitch Buchannon. He left Baywatch at the end of the 1999-2000 season to launch a new syndicated series, Double Cross. But just months after Hasselhoff was blown to bits on his Baywatch finale, the financing fell through on Double Cross and that show was scrapped.

Since then he appeared in the Broadway musical Jekyll & Hyde, in addition to starring in a handful of TV and direct-to-video projects. Most recently, he has been trying with little success to drum up interest in a Knight Rider movie and a Baywatch reunion.

Black IVF Babies Born to White Couple - Report

LONDON (Reuters) - A historic legal battle was brewing in Britain as a newspaper reported Monday that a white couple had had black twins as the result of a mistake during fertility treatment.


The couple will be at the center of a court case this autumn to decide who should be considered the babies' real parents, in the first reported case of its kind in Britain.

The mix-up involves a black couple also trying for a test-tube baby at the same time, The Sun newspaper reported, quoting a source at the authority which runs the fertility clinic involved.

No confirmation was available from health officials, who instead swiftly circulated a gagging order imposed on them by the High Court.

The injunction also forbade naming the two sets of parents involved or the clinic.

Experts say a mistake could have occurred in one of three ways in the IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) process, which involves fertilizing an egg with sperm before implanting the resulting embryo -- often two or three at a time -- in the woman's womb.

The wrong sperm could have been used to fertilize the right egg, the right sperm could have been used to fertilize the wrong egg, or the embryo implanted in the woman may have been another couple's altogether.

WORST NIGHTMARE

"It's our worst nightmare," said Sonya Jerkovic, in charge of the London Fertility Center's laboratory. "It's something we think about all the time."

She admitted mistakes could happen, despite checks at her clinic including color-coding of samples and having two technicians present at every stage in the process.

"Embryos all look the same," she added.

Although experts insist such mistakes are extremely rare, the case will do little to reassure the tens of thousands of British would-be parents who go through IVF treatment each year.

"It's always there at the back of your mind -- what if they're not mine? What if they've put them on the wrong shelf" said Doriver Lilley, 37, who gave birth to IVF twins after six years of trying to conceive.

"It's just awful that somebody's mistake has made a mess of a lot of lives," she told Reuters. "This has been noticed because the babies were black. What if it had been two white couples?"

Worldwide, there have been only two recorded cases of mistakes in which a mother gave birth to babies of an unexpected race after fertility treatment. In 1999, a black baby was born to a white couple because of an embryo mix-up at a fertility clinic in New York. The couple was ordered to return the boy to the biological parents.

But in Holland a woman who gave birth to twins with different fathers in 1997 after receiving IVF treatment was allowed to keep them. The darker skin tone of Wilma Stuart's son, Koen, led to tests that proved that her husband was not the father; his sperm sample had been contaminated.

"Johns' TV" aims to scare off prostitutes

DENVER (Reuters) - It probably won't hurt the rating of the TV networks, but the city of Denver's official cable channel is likely to get a boost in viewers when it starts its "sin bin" program featuring mugshots of prostitutes and their clients, or "johns."


The idea is to shame the women and their clients. "If we can't convict you to get you to change your ways, maybe we can embarrass you and get you to change your ways." Denver Mayor Wellington Webb said earlier this week in announcing the programme.

The idea of a highly public "sin bin" arose out of complaints by residents in an area near the state Capitol who told of seeing prostitutes and their clients in alleys and conducting steamy liaisons in cars, Webb's spokesman, Andrew Hudson, said on Friday.

He added that the mugshots will be obtained from police who take them routinely when prostitutes and their clients are arrested, but only pictures of people convicted will be shown when the program starts airing on local channel 8 on July 25. The photos will also be featured on the city's Web site at www.denvergov.org.

Webb said the driving force behind the move came from members of a group called the Unsinkables Inc., named after Denver resident and socialite Molly Brown who kept her calm during the sinking of the Titanic.

Members of the group had complained about prostitutes operating in the area near Brown's former home.

But Denver prostitute Anna Mitchell, who was sentenced to one year in jail earlier in the week, said the "sin bin" would not stop her plying her trade when she gets out. "Shaming has never done anything for anyone who has nowhere to go," she told the Denver Post.

TAIPEI, TAIWAN -- At least there's no permanent damage.

A newspaper in Taiwan says a 14-year-old boy needed a 20-minute operation to remove congealed glue from his ear. It got there because his mother mistook a small bottle of instant glue for ear drops.

The teen's doctor says the two bottles were kept next to each other in the refrigerator, and the mother grabbed the wrong one when she went to treat the boy's inflamed ear.

The mistake won't cause any permanent hearing loss.

There was no word on why the instant glue was being refrigerated.

Gang-rape of teenager ordered as punishment for brother's sins

A teenage girl was gang-raped in central Pakistan last month as "punishment" meted out by a tribal jury for her brother's alleged affair with a woman of a higher tribe, police said.

A Panchayat, or tribal jury, ordered four men, including one of the jurists, to rape the 18-year-old girl on June 22 in the village of Meerwala.

Meerwala lies 610 kilometres south-west of the capital Islamabad.

District police chief Malik Saeed Awan said authorities were informed of the publicly-ordered gang-rape several days after the incident.

He said four men took turns to sexually assault the girl inside a room. She was then ordered to return home naked before 1,000 onlookers.

The rape was to avenge the "insult" caused to a family of the Mastoi tribe by the girl's brother's alleged "illicit affair" with a woman of a higher social standing.

The girl and her brother were from the lower Gujjar tribe.

The Panchayat had threatened that all women in the accused's family would be raped unless the 18-year-old submitted herself to the public gang rape.

Awan said police were taking action against members of the Panchayat.

Lawyers visiting the tribal area on Sunday urged the authorities to prosecute the rapists and the jury.
